Sago in Taho by kutitots, on Flickr
Before Katipunan Avenue became a highly commercialized zone, a manlalako carrying containers full of taho ingredients used to pass by our house every morning. But as our old street slowly became the place for banks and restaurants, Mr. Manlalako excluded our street from his usual route. I never had “genuine” street taho again until after we moved to a gated subdivision early last yearโso now I can get street taho every day once more if I wanted to!
I like to think of taho as a comfort food which is a mixture of silken tofu, arnibal (brown sugar syrup), and pearl sago. A small cup usually costs about Php5, but since we live in a snooty subdivision where most of our neighbors make us look poor, a small cup of taho here costs Php10. Php25 if you wanted it in a tall glass like mine.
For some unexplained reason, taho bought from a manlalako seems to taste better than that bought in the malls or food kiosks. It might just be psychological, but I think it’s also because the arnibal used in taho from kiosks contain flavoring that I’m not used to having in my taho. Some have a strong taste of vanilla that I don’t really like. Then there’s also this “cold” tahoโI don’t like that either, taho needs to be warm before I can actually eat it.
Taho is a guaranteed “up-lifter” in an otherwise gloomy and stressful morningโit’s warm and sweet at the same time, guaranteed to make you feel better ๐

naku… i miss taho now
Too true! I had taho kanina sa UP, and it was soooo good. We had a regular seller here in our neighborhood, and he’s been selling taho since I was a kid. I can’t remember if he still sells them though. Hmmm. Maabangan nga bukas lol
